A person who could always walk to the shops and now cannot has not just lost some exercise, they have lost the way their whole week worked. Getting that back is usually a realistic goal rather than a hopeful one, and it is a much better thing to aim at than an abstract number of repetitions.
The housing helps. A lot of the town is link-detached, townhouse or bungalow, built to a similar era and standard, which means staircases tend to be regular and rails are usually fitted properly. The common obstacles are the front step, the drive, and the walk to the car rather than anything inside.
After hospital
Depending on what happened and who was on call, South Woodham people come home from Broomfield or from Basildon. Either way the pattern is the same: the discharge is handled, and then the following few weeks are quieter than they should be.
